Faith in the Dark

Loss can shake the ground beneath your faith, your hope, or the way you understand the world. Prayers may feel like they hit a ceiling. Songs you used to sing through may catch in your throat. The God you knew before may feel quiet, far, different, or harder to recognize. You may find yourself in the middle of a service with tears streaming down your face and no idea what you believe anymore. That is not a failing. That is honesty. Faith that has never been shaken has never been tested. What grows here, slowly, in the dark, may look different than what came before. It is rougher. It is quieter. It does not have all the right answers. But it is real, and it is yours. This month is not about pretending the dark isn't dark. It is about learning that faith is not the absence of doubt. It is the willingness to keep showing up, even with empty hands. To sit in the pew and cry through the whole service. To whisper instead of sing. To say, I don't understand. And I am still here. You are allowed to be angry. Some nights the questions belong to one heartbreak. Some nights they carry years. You do not have to sort them before bringing them here. You are allowed to ask why. Once. A hundred times. Or not at all. You are allowed to wrestle, like Jacob in the dark, and walk away with a limp and a new name. You are allowed to feel distant from faith for a season and still belong. Your questions do not make your love smaller. It is not asking you to have it all figured out before you come close. You do not have to force certainty to stay. To sit with yourself here, softly, until the light feels possible again. And it will. The way dawn comes. Long before you can see it, the sky is already turning.
